Short Story #2

Ray worked at a law firm. Everyday was the same thing, protecting mostly guilty criminals from the law. Next to his firm was an alley that always seemed to be dark, even in the day. But today, Ray’s and hundreds of others’ lives were going to change forever.

He walked passed the alley, like he does everyday, when he saw a man standing outside the firm looking extremely nervous and mad. He was clutching something but Ray couldn’t tell what it was. He walked over to the man and said, “Hello”. When the man didn’t reply, Ray asked him if he wanted to come into the firm for some coffee. He nodded and they went inside the firm to his office. They talked about alot of things; Ray did most of the talking. He went on about how he hates his job but he’s good at it. He hates how so many criminals walk free because of him. Suddenly the man didn’t look confused or angry anymore.

They got up, shook hands and the man left. Ray finished his shift, went home and went to bed. The next morning he saw the man’s face on the front page. He turned to the article and read the headline “Suicide Bomber Turned Himself In.” He read the entire article and couldn’t believe his eyes. Stunned, he sat down and thought about what he had just read. The man was going to blow himself up in the firm because they helped the man who robbed his store go free. He claimed he had a change of heart after talking to one of the lawyers inside. He also said that he couldn’t stand blowing up an entire building with at least one good person in it. Ray quit his job that day. As he walked out of the building and passed the alley, he stared into the abyss and knew that for the people blinded by the darkness in their own hearts, there is hope.
