The other day I decided to do something that I haven’t done in a very long time… Ride a bike. Ever since I started driving, my bike has been in the back of the shed collecting dust. There was at one point of my life that I would ride my bike everyday during the summer just riding around with friends or even having to ride to work. I wondered why have I let it sit for so long if I used to love it so much. The answer came to me with some delay but it was as plain as day. I’m lazy.
If you really think about it, how easy is it to just hop in your car, turn the key, slip it into drive, and takeoff. It’s so easy that a caveman can do it (Geico needs to hit me up for some more caveman easy commercials). In order to go for a ride on my bike, I actually have to put sneakers on, find the shed key which isn’t easy at times, open the shed, roll my bike out, and actually use energy to ride the thing. It’s a whole lot more steps to ride a bike to the corner store that’s 1/4 mile away compared to jumping in the car.
I used to even play basketball everyday and I don’t do that anymore. I say it every winter that I can’t wait until the weather is better so I can play basketball almost whenever I want but when summer comes, I don’t take advantage of these opportunities. Most of the time I set an action plan for the next day the night before and think about what I’m going to do or have to do. Days that I don’t have work it usually starts with waking up around 1pm, actually making something to eat, hopping on the computer for a little bit, going out to shoot some hoops, go over to a friends house, and then come back home around 8-9. The only problem is that this plan quickly transforms itself out of my laziness. Waking up around 1 turns into 2pm because of staying up until 3 or 4am. Making breakfast turns into finding some microwavable breakfast items in the freezer. Going on the computer for a little bit, turns into hours of either watching tv shows on Netflix or doing absolutely nothing and being left to figure out why I even went on the computer in the first place. By the time that rolls around it’s about 4pm and I don’t feel like playing basketball anymore. Even going over to a friends house is put off to continue wandering aimlessly on the internet.
The point is that most days I’m lazy when I should be taking advantage of this great weather. Go experience what is around you. Even taking a short bike ride around the block makes you notice things that you’ve never seen before. Awhile ago I took a trip to a salt marsh (Flax Pond) with some people from my Oceanography class and I was amazed at the wildlife that has always been there and all it took was a 35 minute drive. I just have to overcome my laziness and take full advantage of these opportunities that are around me.
Amazing man, this really captures the essence of what some would call a “Lazy generation.” This sort of reminds me of my “Go get some bruises” video as well. This also expresses to me the difference between relaxing and just being lazy. I like this because it’s an inspiration for those who haven’t seen the light of day since they were forced to go and get the mail or mow the lawn.
That’s where I got the inspiration from lol. That video was really good.
i totally agree honestly its the exact same way for me the only time i ever go out for a run or ride my bike is when my car is at the shop and i have no other way of getting around. i have been so lazy that instead of using my knowledge as a rookie mechanic to just fix my own car, i take it to the shop and just spend the money to fix it.
