As a preface to this video, I want to share with you an excerpt from an essay I wrote a couple of months ago:

Both Nietzsche and Marx make present extremely strong theories that could easily be used in order to understand the question of “How did we get here?” and contemporary life in general. It would be difficult to disregard the fact that it seems as though there is an extreme “estrangement of man from man.” We walk into a store and only see the person behind the cash register as an employee of the store and nothing more. We see people cleaning streets and struggle to picture them as people with a family, and as people with a past and future since we can only view them in their capacity as a street cleaner. It’s becoming an unfortunate fact that we calculate the values of others in terms of what we benefit from our relationships with them, reducing them to being no more than a commodity.
